| Back to high-speed
miles. The scenery got a little better . We traded flat and barren
for slight curves and hills in the morning and fully wooded corridors
in the afternoon. It would have been pretty but the main highway view
of the many lakes and ponds were obstructed, except for occasional
glimpses, by very dense treed forests. We stopped for lunch and were
redirected to an alternate route to our destination due to the fact
that the intended route was under construction and a very large section
was gravel only. This info was arrived at because of some comments
made to me by what appeared to be the local town drunk or panhandler.
You never know who the messenger might be :~} The new route was prettier
but would add unplanned hours to the day. Due to the fact that we
slept in and got a late start, we ended up riding at night. As dusk
approached we saw a fox, several large white tail deer and two moose.
Around 10pm it was just fully dark and starting to get foggy. We slowed
down from the newly accustomed speeds of 80-100 mph to around 40-60.
We were staying very alert, thank god, when something appeared about
15 feet in front of us, or at least it seemed that close. It was the
biggest, tallest and most intimidating butt I have ever seen. That’s
right, we had just encountered, and almost closely encountered “A
MOOSE BUTT”. The result was way too close to unfavorable and
unimaginable and the effect was a cross between fear and hilarity.
We joked about if for miles and needless to say slowed down even more.
The next 3 minutes were eerie and fascinating all at once. You know
how when a light hits a pair of eyes at just the right angel in the
dark and the eyes light up and reflect back at you for a second or
two? Well that is what both sides of the road looked like for miles.
We saw dozens of pairs of eyes giving evidence of the animal kingdom
watching us as we traveled by. The roads were wet from the fog so
we tried to get a room in the next town of Kakabeka Falls. Would you
believe that this tiny spot in the road of a town was sold out for
a baseball competition? We had to go about 30 minutes further to Thunder
Bay. We got a couple of hot chocolates and checked in to a hotel for
the night. |
